Synod Ind Racing
There was a cold wind blowing at Talgarreg races on Sunday but there was plenty of close finishes to keep the everyone warm. This was the first of the premiere meetings of the season with the winner of the Grade A final going home with £1000. The racing was exciting on this open track with the long straights ensuring competitive racing.
Talgarreg bred and owned Glan Minstrel (D Jones) took top honours in the first Nursery race while Inshala with new driver Rachel Berry was second and C U Boykin (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) was third. In the second race Chinatown Maori (Harries Llanllwni) had his introduction to Wales & Borders racing beating Aberelan (Morgan Rhymney) and My Imortal (Evans Brecon).
The Novice was a straight race this week but most interest was centred on Classic Day on her season’s debut for the Miles stable in Merthyr who train point to pointers in winter and trotters in summer. She enjoyed seven wins last year and continued this season where she left off last, driven as usual by Rebecca Williams, in second was Coalford Time (Hardwick Brecon) while Miss Muddy Paws (Davies Huntington) claimed third.
The first Grade B heat provided Melanie Langford with another win on her own Wellfield Xpense, beating first time in the grade Lucky Nipper (Thomas Llandeilo) into second and Meadowbranch Mike (Harries Llanllwni) was third. Forgeside Jack (Walker, Gwernogle) gave a welcome win in the second heat for his enthusiastic ‘Cardi’ owners, Vodka Express (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) was second and Bretts Delight (Evans Newtown) was third.
Purple Rain (Edwards Bromfield) proved again what a good horse he is when winning the first heat of the Grade A with Melanie Langford as pilot, with the little chestnut mare Believe (Crowther Llanidloes) in second and Scoot along Sam (Powell Merthyr Cynog) was third. It was double winner from last week Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) who impressed in the second heat giving Derek Pritchard another win, in second was Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) while last year’s winner Shermanator Sam had to settle for third.
After an accident on the first lap, where luckily there were no injuries, the first Baby Novice was re-run. The re-run race provided a great thrill for local owners the Evans family from Neuadd Lwyd as locally bred Non’s Choice notched up her first penalty win driven by one of the family Aled Davies. In second place was Hilltop Polly who when rounding the last corner looked as if she was going to take top spot for new owners the Gittins family from Welshpool while True Grit (Thomas Tregroes) was third. In the second Baby Novice Dafydd’s Boy (Harries Llanllwni) was at the head of affairs with Andrew Hardwick in the seat beating East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) into second and Sam the Man (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn) into third.
It was a little disappointing that there were only 2 entries in the three year old race however Glan Minstrel bred by the treasurer of the meeting Mr Hefin Evans showed some good financial prospects for his owner Danny (bach) Jones also from Talgarreg by beating Wellfield Inspired (Edwards Bromfield) who will surely soon have his day.
The consolation gave a win for the reliable Double Top and Debbie Hitchcock from Haverfordwest beating Brywins Badlands (Williams Tumble) and Falcon Lobell (Davies Huntington).
In the grade B final a sudden surge by one of the back markers Vodka Express (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) looked to have sealed the race but first time in the section Lucky Nipper (Thomas Llandeilo) was not phased, as driver Derek Pritchard sent him up the home straight to claim victory on the line, for dedicated owner Mathew Thomas from Llandeilo, with Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) in third.
The grade A final provided the highlight of the meeting as six year old Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) notched up another win for Derek Pritchard in the drivers championship Obi winning heat and final in the grade B last week, moved into the premiere division of the grade A with acclaim, repeated last weeks success and became the first ‘classic’ winner of the season. Purple Rain (Edwards Bromfield) was second while the improving Believe (Crowther Llanidloes) was third.
After a wonderful day of racing we look forward to next weekend when Brecon plays host on Saturday June 21st 2 pm start.
