Ludlow Harness Races Day 1

Jump Straight to Results

Ludlow races since its inception 5 years ago has established itself as the fun weekend of Wales & Border racing. The mixture of traditional heats alongside the fun races for non drivers and others provided some very competitive racing which enhanced the festival atmosphere. The weather was kind with only the odd shower darkening a mostly sunny afternoon.

As usual events kicked off with the nursery races in the first Aberelan earned his ticket into proper racing for the Morgan family from Rhymney while first time on a racetrack Village Tom (Owens Shobdon) was second with Quicksilver (Hughes Builth Wells) a horse who is improving every week in third. In the second nursery Johnny Cotton (Wellings Ludlow) was impressive beating Seren Penlan and Robin Lloyd from Painscastle with newcomer Highbrooks In Time (Jones Merthyr) in third.

In the first Baby Novice C U Boykin with Debbie Hitchcock from Haverfordwest took top honours while another horse a long way from home Sam the Man (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn) was second with the much improved Hasty Flight (Williams Llanafan) in third. In the second Baby Novice the youngster Village Tom owned by the Owens family from Shobdon and driven by Steve Fluke gave notice that this is a horse to be followed, winning from My Immortal (Evans Brecon) and Saunders Bliss (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey).

Chinatown Maori (Jones Llanllwni) continued his winning ways in the first heat of the Novice while the in form trotter Bellehier (Ladek Cleobury Mortimer) was not far away in second with little Katie Blue (Williams Shrewsbury) in third. In the second heat Coalford Time with owner / driver Andrew Hardwick from Brecon won from Glan Master for new owners the Price family from Guilsfield while Duggan’s Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) was third.

It was Scoot 66 who made all in the first heat of the Grade B for the Bevan family from Llanddewi with Blackfield Willy (Barton Clunderwen) rewarded with second place while the little mare Bon Beti ((Evans-Jones Rhymney) was third. Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) was back on top form in the second heat beating Hilltop Flame (Lewis Presteigne) and Meadowbranch Mike (Jones Llanllwni).

Last week’s winner Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) made nothing of the extra handicap from her win last week, she swept to the front mid way through the race and with her driver Louisa’s encouragement claimed another victory while Live the Dream (Langford Pontardawe) returning after a month’s absence ran on well to be second with Bestman (Owens Shobdon) running a much improved race to be third. Purple Rain looks like he is enjoying a purple patch at the moment as he raced off 50 yards to take top honours for Terry Edwards from Bromfield while the ever popular Boomerang (Peters Welshpool) claimed second place with Master T J (Gwatkin Evenjobb) running well to be third.

After the break the more light hearted races began. The juniors saw young Daisy Cornes initiated into the racing scene as she enjoyed her first race driving the old school master Music Man, Bethan Perks on Maple Star (Prosser Libanus) took first prize while Daisy drew plenty of support from the enthusiastic crowd. Next it was the turn of some of the ‘has beens’ as Coalford Time piloted by Merthyr fruiterer Stephen (PG) Probert won the first non-driver race beating Miss Muddy Paws and John Davies from Huntington into second with The Sizzler and Mike Lloyd from Kingswood in third.

In the next race Helen Brisland who helps with the horses in the Ludlow yard drove Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) to victory from Bobbie Bird driving Hilltop Flame (Lewis Presteigne) with John Perks from Presteigne driving his own Fold Rajah into third place.

The day ended with the two non whip races, in the first Mark Evans the garage mechanic from Brecon on his youngster My Immortal showed them the way home from Sam the Man the youngster belonging to Mathew Tromans from Newcastle Emlyn while Glan Master (Price Guilsfield) was third. Sabrina Stephens in her first year in adult competition with the flying Scoot 66 secured victory in the second race from Mark White enjoying his come-back driving Vodka Express (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) to a rousing reception from his fans and supporters while Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) was third.

So with the first day of racing over, the finals of the Novice, B and A will be on Sunday as well as the Free For All and the long distance races. Once the horses have been bedded down for the night the party goers will take over the race field and we will see whether the form of the horses or the form of the drivers will be affected by the merrymaking.
