At Tairgwaith near Ammanford W&BC held their second race meeting of the season, this was run by the association and a very enjoyable day’s racing was witnessed by a small but discerning crowd. The horses looked well, the clock showed some very fast times, and there were several close finishes for the camera to determine.

The Nursery races were the first on the track both were won by horses from the Ludlow area. Brent Ladek from Cleobury Mortimer taking first spoils with his young grey Alpine Heights while Johnny Cotton belonging to the Wellings family from Ludlow took the second race.

The Grade A heats were the first races for the punters with the favourite Mahogany Duke coming home in front for the Edmunds family from Porthcawl, Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) was second while Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) on his first run in the premier grade was third. In the second race Vodka Express took advantage of his handicap as the only horse on the gate and sped to victory for the Weigel family from Llanddewi Velfrey, Purple Rain (Edwards Bromfield) showed a good turn of foot to finish second while Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) claimed third place.

In the Novice race the popular square trotter Belleheir (Ladek, Cleobury Mortimer) lined up alongside the pacers which are often thought to have an advantage over the more traditional gait. However Belleheir was not going to be subdued and produced a wonderful run up the back straight to clinch victory for the popular blacksmith, who must have been singing all the way home to Ludlow after his winning double. In second was last week’s winner C U Boykin (Hitchcock Haverfordwest) while Coalford Time the ‘canny’ horse belonging to Andrew Hardwick from Brecon was third.

With three lady drivers on the gate the Grade B horses set off at a furious pace and it was Louisa Myers driving Vyrnwy Chef (Barton Clunderwen) on his season’s debut that got to the head of affairs and although stable mate Blackfield Willy with Robert Barton aboard did all in their power to catch them, they will have to wait for another day, while back in third was Chinatown Maori (Jones Llanllwni).

In the Baby Novice Ithon Eagle (Edwards, Bromfield) with Wayne Knox driving went one better than last week as they upped the tempo to sweep to victory, Welsh Cowboy (Evans, Red Roses) was second with Man of the Day (Jones, Llanllwni) showing great promise in third.

The Grade A final was always going to be an exciting race as horses vied for position in order to get a run, would the gate horses prevail or would one of the back horses see a way through? In the fastest time of the day it was the only mare in the race Bon Bethan (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) driven by the ‘flying nurse’ Louisa Myers who ducked under the wire first reversing the heat placings as Mahogany Duke (Edmunds, Porthcawl) claimed second from the fast finishing Purple Rain (Edwards, Bromfield) in third.

The day ended with the consolation a race designed for the feel-good factor which this week went to I’m Still the Man driven by Stephen P.G. Probert for Gadger Jones from Merthyr, Lynne Boxhall on Red Adair (Harries Merthyr) was second and Mathew Thomas, Llandeilo on his own Lucky Nipper was third.

The next race meeting will see the start of the grass season as Llandyfaelog, near Carmarthen hosts the Bank Holiday fixture on May 4th with a 2 pm start.
