Knighton Racing

Jump Straight to Results

Knighton races in the middle of May has long been considered the start of the ‘trotting season proper’, and Saturday proved this is still the case with many more entries and a good crowd of enthusiastic spectators. The weather which always plays a part was not too unkind with only the occasional shower to slow down the going. The racing was spectacular with lots of races featuring several different leaders, so picking the winners was difficult even as they flashed over the line.

The Nursery races always provides some guide to the future of racing and this week the winners in the first and second part were repeats of their previous outings as Johnny Cotton (Wellings Ludlow) and Alpine Heights (Ladek Cleobury Mortimer) took the top honours. In the third part it was first time on the track for Fold American (Perks Presteigne) but he showed no nerves as he claimed victory. In the first race Glan Levit (Evans, Talgarreg) and Hilltop Flame (with young driver Bethan Perks securing her place in senior driving) were second and third while in the second the places were held by Sunnyside Geoff (Clarke Brecon) and Classic Man (Langford, Pontardawe), while Abernant (Greenway/Hardwick partnership) and Zip Along (Harries Llanllwni) made up the places in the third race.

The Novice heats were the first races for the punters and in these, the early season form was confirmed. In the first heat the impressive Ithon Eagle (Edwards, Bromfield) driven by Wayne Knox won from the improving Red Adair (Harries Merthyr) with East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) in third. In the second heat Belleheir, everyone’s favourite trotter, driven as usual by his enthusiastic owner Brent Ladek from Cleobury Mortimer swept through the field on the last lap to leave the ‘pacers’ standing, Hasty Flight (Williams, Llanafan) ran on into second with Forgeside Mo (Bird, Ludlow) third.

The Grade B was a straight race and again previous form pointed the way as Vyrnwy Chef (Barton Clunderwen) driven by Louisa Myers claimed victory from a fast finishing Scoot 66 (Bevan, Llanddewi) on his first outing of the season with another on his first run Forgeside Jack (Walker, Gwernogle) in third.

The Grade A was split into three heats for safety reasons, due to the condition of the ground. In the first Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams, Llanafan) claimed victory from Vodka Express (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) with Purple Rain (Edwards, Bromfield) in third. In the second the back marker Merrington Man (Thomas, Rhymney) gave a hint of his ability as he steamed forwards from the tail of the field but Mahogany Duke (Edmunds Porthcawl) was equal to the challenge and secured the victory while Ithon Ace (Williams Shrewsbury) ran on into third. In the last heat Bon Bethan (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) continued winning ways with usual driver Louisa Myers on board, in second was the rather ‘grumpy’ grey Live the Dream (Langford Pontardawe) with Meadowbranch Mike (Jones, Llanllwni) in third.

There were three Baby Novice races this week with Wellfield Inspired (Griffiths, Pontardawe) looking just that as he gave Joseph Knox (Wayne’s son) his first official win with W&BC while Glan Minstrel (Jones, Talgarreg) was second and Radnor Halleluliah (A Bevan, Builth) was third. In the second it was Gareth Bevan the third generation of this racing family from Builth who claimed an unsurprising victory on first time out Ithon Express from the well supported True Grit (Thomas, Tregroes) with well regarded Ynyston Tommy (Isaacs, Ystradmeurig) in third. In the third race Aberelan (Morgan, Rhymney) secured her movement into the Novice grade by beating The Red Devil (Greenway, Michaelchurch) while Saunders Playboy (Pritchard, Rhosgoch) claimed third.

The Novice final looked set to be a competition between the heat winners but the fabulous trotter Belleheir, perhaps relishing the soft conditions, made light of his back mark, and with his blacksmith owner Brent Ladek from Cleobury Mortimer surged to the front, it was the much improved Red Adair (Harries, Merthyr) who claimed second place while Ithon Eagle (Edwards, Bromfield) this week had to be content with third. Belleheir now takes his place in open racing, where this talented trotter is sure to lay down the gauntlet to all the pacers!

The Saddle race only had three runners and with a spread handicap it was always going to be difficult for the horses trailing and so it proved as Classic Day ridden by owner Rebecca Williams, Merthyr waited for no-one with Blackfield Willy (Barton, Clunderwen) in second and new prospect Ladyford Chaps (Bevan Llanddewi) in third.

The Grade A final produced another win for the leading lady as Louisa Myers and her beloved Bon Bethan (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) illustrated why they were the top combination from last year, while stable companion Vodka Express (Weigel, Llanddewi Velfrey) took second and Live the Dream (Langford, Pontardawe) running more fluently just clinched third.

Six runners in the consolation ensured an interesting race but it was Wellfield Xpense (Langford, Ludlow) and driven by the young pretender Joseph Knox who claimed victory from Chinatown Maori (Jones, Llanllwni) with Fold flight (Perks, Presteigne) in third.

So the season is well on its way, as once Knighton has gone, we look forward to weekly meetings, geographically spread, making new acquaintances, meeting old friends. The next race meeting is on Bank Holiday Monday when we make the first trip into ‘Cardiland’ as Synod Inn plays host on May 25th with a 1.30 start.
