Amman Valley Trotting

Jump Straight to Results

Saturday was a glorious sunny day when Mid Wales & Border horses took advantage of the superb facilities of the all weather track at Tairgwaith near Ammanford. Although the trotting is synonymous with the older traditions of racing, members are never slow to take on the challenge of the clock on these occasions and with the Nursery horses clocking 2:12 an afternoon of fast and furious racing was assured. The many close finishes provided testing conditions for the judges and the camera man was essential.

The three nursery races showed the standard of these new entrants with several now making their progression into the ‘punter’ races next week. These include the three winners - Abernant belonging to the Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley and Hardwick Brecon partnership; Zip Along (Harries Llanllwni) and Seren Penlan (Lloyd Painscastle).

The Novice heats were the next on the card and My Immortal driven by his owner, garage mechanic Mark Evans from Brecon enhanced his reputation as one of the fastest youngsters on the circuit beating East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) and Ithon Express (G Bevan Builth). In the second heat the impressive Ithon Eagle (Edwards Bromfield) claimed another victory in front of Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) and Hasty Flight (Williams Llanafan).

The Grade B was a straight race but with maximum numbers it was no walk over. It was the fantastic trotter Belleheir with his equally cool owner-driver Brent Ladek from Cleobury Mortimer, who seems unperturbed whether the track is grass or gravel, who swept to a very popular victory, reducing the two horses from the Barton Clunderwen stable (Vyrnwy Chef and Family Circle) to second and third.

All eyes were on the clock at the start of the first Grade A heat and the race proved another ‘cracker’ as Purple Rain (Edwards Bromfield) driven by Wayne Knox raced over the line in what proved to be the fastest time of the day (2:03.44) while Vodka Express (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) and Shermanator Sam (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn) claimed the minor places. Obi-Wan-Kenobi the illustrious horse belonging to the Williams family from Llanafan took the other heat driven by leading driver Derek Pritchard from Rhosgoch. Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) was second and the remarkable Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) third.

The three Baby Novice races followed in the first the newly promoted Fold American (Perks Presteigne) who looks set to go right to the very top, beat the enigmatic Seren Penlan (Lloyd Painscastle) while the speedy Johnny Cotton (Wellings Ludlow) was third. Scarlet Lady with owner Andrew Bevan aboard took the second race with Wellfield Inspired (Griffiths Pontardawe) second and the up and coming Glan Levit (Evans Talgarreg) was third. The third race was one of the closest finishes of the day with four horses going under the wire together. It was Lowri Dillon a descendent of the old ‘Dillon breed’ showing that a little bit of old blood is no deterrent to winning with ‘cheerful Cardi’ Rees Jenkins in the seat who secured the judges’ verdict while Serenity (Jones Llanllwni) on her first run with Wales & Borders was second and The Crusader (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) was third.

The Novice final followed with another good display from My Immortal (Evans Brecon) as he makes his way up the racing ladder of success, while in second was East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) who is always there or thereabouts, with Ithon Eagle (Edwards Bromfield) not far away in third.

The six furlong race is always popular and this race was no exception as the newly promoted open horse Classic Day (Miles Merthyr) surged across the finishing line with her usual pilot Rebecca Williams, closely followed by Chinatown Maori (Jones Llanllwni) and Family Circle (Barton Clunderwen).

In the Grade A final Shermanator Sam with dedicated owner Mathew Tromans from Newcastle Emlyn took advantage of a lucky run through to claim victory from a fast finishing Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) while the long time leader Wellfield Xpense (Langford Ludlow) was third.

The consolation race completed the afternoon’s events and the speedy Maple Star (Prosser Libanus) who seems to revel in showing her paces on the all weather track beat Blackfield Willy (Barton Clunderwen) and Red Adair (Harries Merthyr).

After a very competitive afternoon the racing moves next week to Ceredigion where ‘Cardi Trotting’ hosts their annual meeting at Talgarreg on Sunday Jun 21st first race at 2 pm.
