Aberystwyth races on Sunday did not enjoy the best of weather, a heavy shower just before racing began and then after a couple of hours of sunshine an annoying drizzle dampened the course but not people's spirits. The hard working committee provided a good programme with generous prizemoney, and as usual the friendly 'Cardi' welcome contributed to a wonderful afternoon of racing. Conditions did not allow the use of the start car but the versatility within the sport ensured that this did not detract from the racing entertainment.

The two nursery races provide the first steps on the ladder for the horses. Linda Atherton from Narberth who has Murray, a new homebred youngster in her stable, won the first while the second race went to George Thomas from Llanybydder's homebred youngster the nicely named Razzle Dazzle.

The Novice heats as usual were the first races for the punters, this week the Debbie Hitchcock (Haverfordwest) fans could record a back to back double as she partnered her own C U Boykin to victory in the first beating Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) into second and Aberelan (Morgan Rhymney) into third. In the second heat her winner was Serenity owned by the Jones family from Llanllwni with Ithon Eagle (Edwards Bromfield) second and Glan Master (Price Guilsfield) was third.

Maple Star (Prosser Libanus) is a mare who is quietly improving as the season progresses and with Wayne Knox as pilot won the first Grade B heat while the evergreen Scoot 66 (Bevan Llanddewi) was second and the reliable little Bon Beti (Evans-Jones Rhymney) was third. In the second heat the extra special My Immortal with his owner Mark Evans from Brecon on board scored an impressive victory with Chinatown Maori (Jones Llanllwni) in second and Vyrnwy Chef (Barton Clunderwen) third.

Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) who must surely be one of the best mares in racing today showed her class in the first heat of the Grade A winning from Lucky Nipper (Thomas Llandeilo) who looks to be returning to something like last year's form while the irrepressible Boomerang (Peters Welshpool) claimed third place. The other classy mare Believe (Pritchard Rhosgoch) took the second heat from Meadowbranch Mike (Jones Llanllwni) in second and the 'Cardi' favourite Shermanator Sam (Tromans Newcastle Emlyn) third.

Three races in the Baby Novices augers well for the future of the sport as the young horses make their way in racing. Sunnyside Geoff (Clark Brecon) is a horse who is regularly featuring in race finishes and this week secured another marker on his way up the ladder beating C U Tiber (Langford Ammanford) and Sandside Cash (Elder New Quay).

In the second Baby Novice the three year old Brywins Snowflake put the Weigel family Llanddewi Velfrey to shout as he passed the winning post in front of Scarlet Lady (Bevan Builth) with Wellfield Inspired (Griffiths Pontardawe) in third. Hilltop W R driven by his owner ex point to point rider Stephen Lloyd from Painscastle claimed victory in the third race which secured his ticket into the Novice section. He beat the improving Greenhill Raque (Thomas Rhymney) and the well named Zip Along (Harris Llanllwni).

Although the sport becomes more professional as every year progresses there is still part kept just for fun and this includes the races scheduled for the lighter elements of harness racing. The ladies are in this category no less competitive but provides enjoyment for competitors and public alike.

Sabrina Stephens from Penybont is a young girl who served her apprenticeship in the junior races and has now developed into a competent driver and her drive on Wellfield Inspired (Griffiths Pontardawe) could well be described as just that - inspired - as they held off the challenge of the phenomenal Obi-Wan-Kenobi (Williams Llanafan) who was second with Greenhill Raque (Thomas Rhymney) claiming third. The six furlong dash provided the Weigel family with another celebration as Vodka Express beat the full brother and sister Forgeside Jack (Walker Gwernogle) and Forgeside Mo (Bird Ludlow).

It is rare for 'Cardiland' to host a saddle race but they should not be disappointed as it provided a thrilling spectacle with the well fancied Family Circle (Barton Clunderwen) ridden by saddle specialist Emma Layton from Walton claiming victory from the back marker Purple Rain (Edwards Bromfield) while Swifty (Davies Huntington) looked every bit a saddle horse as he came in third.

The Non drivers were the next to take to the track with part owner Russell Greenway from Michaelchurch Eskley claiming a narrow victory on Abernant, from the front running 'baby' Clares Own (James Evans Newcastle Emlyn) while Fold American with John Perks from Presteigne was third.

Then it was time for the serious business of the day with the three finals. The Novice provided the anticipated win of heat winner Serenity (Jones Llanllwni) with the likeable Duggans Domino (Gwatkin Evenjobb) was second and Glan Master (Price Guilsfield) who seemed to enjoy the difficult conditions was third. My Immortal (Evans Brecon) was invincible in the Grade B final as he and his owner / breeder / trainer, mechanic Mark Evans were first past the post while the little mare Bon Beti (Evans Jones, Rhymney) was second and the ever popular Scoot 66 (Bevan Llanddewi) claimed another rosette for third.

The Grade A illustrated the talent of the beautiful black mare Bon Bethan as she secured another victory for the Weigel family from Llanddewi Velfrey making a total of 4 wins for the day, Meadowbranch Mike (Jones Llanllwni) was second while, as his name suggests the mighty Boomerang (Peters Welshpool) always comes back and picked up third prize.

The final race of the day was the consolation in which the rather erratic Seren Penlan with her owner Robin Lloyd on board showed she has speed, beating another variable in Ithon Artist (Wozencraft Llangurig), with Ysthwyth Gwynfor (Jones Church Stretton) in third.

So at the end of wonderful day of racing, despite the weather, with many close finishes we look forward to another 'Cardi' meeting as the relaxed Tregaron meeting on Saturday August 1st 2 pm start sets us up for the mid week Penybont races on Wednesday August 5th
