MID WALES & BORDER COUNTIES HARNESS RACING

Jump Straight to Results

The last race meeting of the season at Almeley on Saturday was one of those happy / sad occasions. The glorious weather contributed to a fantastic day of fun racing while the anticipated closed season during the winter months leave everyone wishing the racing could be an all year round event. The charity meeting to close the season is always special with the Air Ambulance, being the nominated charity this year. Everyone contributes, the horseowners give half of their prizemoney, the stewards and other officers work for free, and this year Severn Valley races after such a successful televised meeting added a special contribution of £500. This all adds to the feel-good factor so important to local racing.

Even on the last meeting of the season the sport is looking to the future, and the nursery horses are that future, the first race won by Greenhill Megan the homebred youngster owned by the Morgan family from Rhymney, trained and driven by Andrew Hardwick from Brecon. The second race was won by Merefield Jack another homebred from the Broome stable at Ludlow driven as usual by Rebecca Williams another native of Brecon.

Andrew Hardwick took another winner in the first Novice race when he partnered, part share with Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley, the impressive Abernant to victory with East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) and Greenhill Raque (Harries, Merthyr) in the minor places. Andrew also took the second Novice race with Sunnyside Geoff (Clarke Brecon) beating The Red Devil (Greenway, Michaelchurch) and Saunders Playboy (Pritchard Rhosgoch).

In the Grade B Blackfield Willy driven by Horst Weigel for the Barton family from Clunderwen repeated their success of last week beating Serenity (Jones, Llanllwni) and Maple Star (Prosser, Libanus).

The Grade A saw all time favourite Boomerang (Peters Welshpool) making the most of the front spot on the gate to lead them all home, telling all that he’s not finished even if he is 12 years old. In second was Vodka Express (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) with Live the Dream (Langford, Ammanford) third. In the second Grade A Forgeside Jack (Walker Gwernogle) alone on the gate also took charge beating Shermanator Sam (Tromans, Newcastle Emlyn) and Meadowbranch Mike (Jones, Llanllwni).

In the Baby Novice races Wayne Knox enjoyed a back to back double as the first race saw The Crusader (Greenway, Michaelchurch) take top honours from Glan Dancer (Evans Talgarreg) and Classic Man (Langford, Ammanford). He piloted Fold Eventful (Perks Presteigne) to victory in the second race ahead of Little Man II (Wozencraft, Llangurig) and Golden Nugget (Gwatkin Evenjobb).

The saddle race has been revived this year with several new jockeys taking up the reins. Lisa Bevan from Builth partnered brother Gareth’s Ithon Express to repeat last week’s impressive win while leading saddle horse Vyrnwy Chef (Barton Clunderwen) was second and stable mate Blackfield Willy was third. The Junior race is another which has improved as the season progressed especially since the arrival of the ‘Llanddewi pair’ of twelve year old Scoot 66 and eleven year old Elin Bevan, the ‘old horse’ with the young jockey make a formidable team and added another trophy to their collection. In second place was Sunnyside Geoff and Dale Williams from Brecon with recently returned Daisy Cornes on Golden Nugget in third while back marker Live the Dream with Ryan Walters were beaten by their handicap.

After the break the ‘fun’ races began the non whip had to be divided into two, illustrating just how many horses go as well without the ‘persuader’ as with it. The first race was won by Ithon Artist (Wozencraft Llangurig) a temperament horse but with lots of ability, in second was East of Eden (Pritchard Rhosgoch) with The Red Devil (Greenway Michaelchurch Eskley) in third. In the second part Meadowbranch Mike (Jones, Llanllwni) was the victor from Forgeside Jack (Walker Gwerogle) and Vodka Express (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey).

A new race introduced this year was the reverse race with the horses going counter clockwise: trotting throughout the world is usually run right handed so this was something new for everyone. Vintage Lobell (Collingwood, Huntington) showed he is versatile and can go either way, he took the lead early and was just caught on the home straight by the indomitable Believe (Pritchard Rhosgoch) while Bon Bethan (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) ran on into third.

There were three Non-drivers races with the usual interest and excitement they cause. John Perks from Presteigne always like to get his name on the book and this time he partnered the up and coming Fold Eventful to a good win beating Ystwyth Gwynfor with Jim Rogers and Greenhill Megan with Ian Morgan.

In the second race The Sizzler rewarded his faithful owner Mike Lloyd from Kingswood, by the two of them crossing the line in front of The Crusader with his owner Russell Greenway and Greenhill Raque and PG (Stephen Probert). Allan Gittins is another enthusiastic competitor and this time partnered the mighty Boomerang, they swept up the home straight to claim victory from Serenity and Robert Langford with Maple Star and Helen Brisland in third.

This was a wonderful day to end an interesting season, when the weather did not always co-operate, but the racing has been exceptional, and the season ended with a fitting day to sustain the memories until next year.
