Teifi Harness Racing at Post Bach

Jump Straight to Results

Teifi races is a fairly new addition to the Mid Wales calendar and this young energetic committee have been dogged with bad weather in the past but this year proved to be a fine, dry day the track providing perfect conditions for the competitive racing for some of the best prize money of the year.

The local Elder family started the day off with a win for their youngster Rhyds Backchat (Elder Blaencelyn) in the Nursery with Novice driver Ellen Williams from Llandysul on Cross Current in second and Blackmountain Rose (Gibbons Llanigon) in third.

The first Novice heat provided new recruit Forest Surprise (Miles Merthyr) with a satisfying win in her higher grade, beating Chinatown Lucky (Williams Pencader) and the improving Precious Cargo (Gwatkin Evenjobb). Tyssul Pearl (Barton Clunderwen) took top honours in the second Novice heat, ahead of the lightly raced Brywins Jo Jo (Jones Ammanford) and Brywins Sweetheart (Marr Ammanford).

Derek Pritchard on Too Hot Today (Jones Merthyr) dictated the first heat of the Grade B to good effect to claim a win, from Greenhill Cliff (Williams Brecon) with the newly upgraded Miss Jackpot (Langford Ammanford) in third. Lakeside Pan owned by the enigmatic John Elder from New Quay took the second Grade B heat from Vyrnwy Taffie (Evans Llanybydder) with The Bold Jack (Gething Gilwern) in third.

In the first heat of the Grade A Ithon Inmate (Price Brecon) driven by usual pilot trainer/driver Derek Pritchard ran impressively to beat the sometimes erratic, Dernol Duke (Wozencraft Llangurig) with the backmarker Bon Jasper (Jones Llanllwni) running on to be third. Local mare Clares Own (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) with her usual driver Mathew Tromans ran determinedly to take the second Grade A heat in front of Wednesday’s winner Meadowland Hasty (Price Brecon) with No Mercy (Weigel Llanddewi Velfrey) in third.

Mathew Tromans from Newcastle Emlyn secured a back to back double when he steered his youngster Hilltop Surprise to her first win for the punters, coming home ahead of B G’s Star (Wilson Llanfihangel ar arth) and Ceiron Overway (Williams Porth yr Rhyd). During the break the crowd were entertained with a donkey derby with the children showing they also know how to ride a finish.

Four juniors lined up for their race, with the honours going to the experienced Blackfield Buddy (Barton Clunderwen) partnered by grand-daughter Anna Lewis, who finished just ahead of the inseparable, joint seconds, Tommy the Dealer with Ellie Bevan on board and Saunders Playboy ridden by first-timer Ellie Tromans while Celyn Evans was inches behind on Made in Wales.

The dash brought another victory for Brywins Lucky Charm for the Jones family from Brecon, driven by the young ‘Cardi’ Aled Davies, adding to their victory on Wednesday, Lucky Charm now moves up into open racing.

Nia Patrol with owner Becky Williams from Ludlow on board, made up for her below standard performance in her heat, by winning the consolation, with Kestrels Rogue (Wilson Llanfihangel ar arth) in second and Blackies Boy (Prosser Libanus) in third.

The afternoon’s racing was completed with the three finals, in the Novice Brywins Jo Jo (Jones Ammanford) with joint trainer Rhun Wilson on board showed spectacular speed to gain victory in front of the two heat winners, Tyssul Pearl (Barton Clunderwen) and Forest Surprise (Miles Merthyr). This lovely dark mare now progresses to the Grade B.

In the Grade B Final, Lakeside Pan the talented horse belonging to John Elder from New Quay, added to the victories he has enjoyed over more than sixty years in racing, driven as usual by son Wayne with trainer, daughter-in-law Emma, shouting encouragement. In second was another favourite, Miss Jackpot (Langford Ammanford) first day in the division, while Too Hot Today (Jones Merthyr) was third. Lakeside Pan now takes on the ‘big boys’ in the Grade A.

In the Grade A Final Ithon Inmate (Price Brecon) took no prisoners as he and his partner Derek Pritchard stormed away from the gate to claim a superlative victory from the enigmatic Dernol Duke (Wozencraft Llangurig) while Clares Own (Evans Newcastle Emlyn) claimed third prize. The Price family from Brecon are another family deeply involved in racing tradition, with only two horses in training, they have enjoyed an enviable week, on Wednesday Meadowland Hasty took the premier race at Newbridge while stablemate Ithon Inmate completed a satisfying double here at the Teifi meeting.

So after a wonderful afternoon of racing, the next ‘meet’ is the Llandrindod Wells meeting held at Penybont race course on Bank holiday Monday August 25th starting at 1.30 pm.
